Viral Ad Videos - November 2014

I feel like November has just flown by! It wasn’t too long ago that we were looking at Halloween ads with stereo-typically dumb horror movie victims, a disturbingly detailed homage to The Shining, and a giant-spider who likes plot-twists. Now, we are at the end of November, so that means it is time to look at the some of the top viral ad videos of the month!

Week of Greatness 2014; Foot Locker (2,616,000+ views)

I’ll admit, I’m a pretty simple person, and that was reaffirmed for me today when watching this Foot Locker ad. As I was watching the ad, I wasn’t really that impressed. Both the script and acting are a little forced, and definitely not natural. One of the hooks of the commercial is suppose to be that Tim Duncan is very wooden and mono-expressive, but it almost doesn’t work because Derrick Rose is also a little wooden. This commercial is suppose to work on the premise that Tim Duncan is emotionless, but in order to do that, you can’t set him up with someone who also lacks the correct emotions. I’m eating a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and all I taste is peanut butter! The saving grace to this commercial, and the only reason I am writing about it, is when Duncan “knocks” his plant over. I thought that had excellent execution!

Kitten Therapy; TidyCats (4,735,000+ views)

I feel I need to get this out of the way: I don’t like cats. Kittens are adorable, and I will “Ooo” and “Awe” at all of the cute cat videos and pictures that cover the Internet, but when it comes to the real thing, keep them away from me. With all of that said, I thought this was one of the greatest concepts for a branded viral video. I won’t say too much about the concept, because I think the video does such a great job. I will say that I’ve never thought about how TidyCats has to approach their business. I realized that one process they might go through is trying to get people excited to have a cat as a pet in their homes. It makes sense, but I never made that connection. I don’t have a cat, so I never buy cat litter. If I had a cat, I’d have to make that purchase, and possibly buy from TidyCats.

Official Christmas 2014 Ad; Sainsbury’s (12,497,000+ views)

I almost refused to post and even watch this video. I have a big pet-peeve for just about any reference to Christmas before Thanksgiving. When I saw that this was a Christmas ad, I thought, “Nope! Maybe I’ll see you in a week.” When I looked at the ad’s rank on some viral lists, I felt I couldn’t pass up a video with this much buzz. It was… actually… can you hold on a second? I’m going to re-watch the video and make sure I’m not going to over state my feelings…

Alright, I’m back. Yep, I can say it. This ad is amazing and very moving! And it’s just for chocolate! I don’t have anything against chocolate, but I just feel this ad could have been used to promote something with a bit more importance.
