Viral Ad Videos - December 2014

Not only are we at the end of another month, but also we are closing out the entire year. As we finish out both December and 2014, let’s look at a few of the top trending ad videos of the month. This month, we have entries from Samsung, Google and Freshpet.

[Do You Note?] My Brother Sure Knows How to Multitask! – Multitasking on GALAXY Note 4; Samsung Mobile (3,023,000+ views)

I’m a little torn as to whether I like this ad or not. It is part of a five video series, and each video represents a different member of a family and a feature of the new Samsung Note 4. In each ad, a family member has a problem, and (unsurprisingly) the Note 4 always has a solution. For example, the Dad‘s old phone is constantly dying because of its poor battery life, so the ad features the extended battery life and quick charging of the Note 4.

They are good ads. Each showcases its feature in a manner that I could see myself using it in real life. My conflict is specifically with the Brother ad. The ad touts the multitasking functionality of the Note 4 – which is cool – but they setup the need for multitasking by showing how angry the brother gets when he is interrupted by notifications while doing something else on his phone… maybe watching soccer for example. It just seems so ungrateful. You have an amazing piece of technology that allows you to watch a sporting event happening on the other side of the globe, and you are angry that this same device also does something else?! Get out of here! I know this is just my inner curmudgeonly old man coming out, but this is so whiny and ungrateful.

Year in Search 2014; Google (11,044,000+ views)

Google’s Year in Search 2014 ad is so neat! I really like the simple juxtaposition of the search terms, “We search for… hope… more than fear.” The different visuals paired up with the search topics emphasized the impactful moments of this past year. Even though it is silly, the old man dancing at the 1 minute 3 seconds mark is probably my favorite clip.

After watching this ad, I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t more information. I’d like to know more about the actual numbers alluded to in the ad, so when I saw the link: google.com/2014, I went to check it out. While it wasn’t the information I was looking for, I did appreciate the effort Google made. It also leads to a fun story about Zack Brown’s potato salad kickstarter project. Brown requested $10 to help make potato salad, and became the year’s largest search trend around crowdfunding. Not surprisingly, it was the only trending search to feature the phrase “potato salad.” Incase you are wondering, Brown raised $55,000, and used that money to reduce homelessness in his local area.

Freshpet Holiday Feast; Freshpet (6,876,000+ views)

Alright, let’s just get this out of the way… this ad is weird! It’s two minutes of dogs (and a cat) sitting at a holiday table, awkwardly eating with human hands. That is nightmare fuel! Once you get past the uneasiness of the visual, it actually becomes quite adorable. The ad is also a bit bold. There are no other references to Freshpet in the ad, other than the opening title, an on-screen hashtag and the links screen at the end. They are really counting on people maintaining the connection between the ad and their brand.

A small note, which to me makes this ad even better, is that the dogs in the ad were from the local humane society. The hope was that the ad would also raise awareness for adoption. Pretty neat!
