About a month ago, I wrote a blog about David Shing “Shingy.” He is AOL’s “Digital Prophet.” I have no idea what that means, but according to Shingy, “I listen to where media is headed and figure out how our brands can win in that environment.” He flies all around the world, going to conferences and watching the future take shape across the vast online landscape. If you’d like some more information on Shingey, you can read my previous blog, “A Digital Prophet Living in the Age of Social.”
This week, I want to get into the first video in a short series of interviews that Shingy conducted. The first video is with Academy Award Winning Actor Kevin Spacey! Spacey and Shingy talk about the ways technology can explode creativity.
Spacey is the star and Executive Producer of House of Cards, a Netflix original production. This means that the show did not originate on broadcast or cable television. It was produced with the sole intent to be streamed online via Netflix. With the ever-changing landscape of media and particularly online media, Spacey believes that, “audiences are evolving faster than networks… maybe advertisers.” This is a reason he believes the future will be pushing video content out on these new platforms.
Spacey goes on to say that he believes these new platforms will continue to grow stronger because, “…the best writers, directors, actors, producers… [will] end up going to a more fertile ground. Allowing them to sort of create what they want to create. That is empowering to creatives and that is hugely empowering to the audience.” I’m curious how traditional television landscape (broadcast and cable) will fair with this push towards online media? Even just three or four years ago, even with the rise of online viewing, the mentality was traditional television was still the birthplace of most of the major media that audiences wanted to consume. Now, companies like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon are creating their own content – their own successful content (House of Cards is an Emmy winning show).
When Shingy asked if he had a any predictions for the future landscape, Spacey said, “We cannot presume we know how people are going to want to watch things, and we can’t presume that things working this year will work a year from now… I will not be surprised by technological advancements, by platforms that we could not imagine…” You can watch the entire interview below:
