A few weeks ago, I found a video series hosted by a man named, David Shing aka. “Shingy.” I made sure to include a picture of him, because there is no way I could describe his look and do it justice. He reminds me of a painting hanging in a gallery… a painting with tons of colors and shapes, and you don’t really understand what the artist was trying to express, but yet you still enjoy looking at it… completely fascinating.
Shingy is AOL’s Digital Prophet, like for real, that is what it reads on his business cards. I definitely can not define what the required skills or departmental duties of a digital prophet are, but I can tell you a little bit about what he does. According to Shingy, “I listen to where media is headed and figure out how our brands can win in that environment.” He flies all around the world, going to conferences and watching the future take shape across the vast online landscape… and he makes a six-figure salary, can you believe that?!
The guy seems extremely interesting, and his view on media follows suit. According to The New Yorker article, “Shingy believes in storytelling—more story, less telling. A story can be anything—text or image, six seconds or thirteen hours. According to Shingy, we are no longer living in the age of information; it’s the age of social, and social is all about conversations.” I love this idea!
For years, at Transformation Marketing we have been telling our clients it is about being part of the conversation. It can’t always be about making the sale today, but instead making sure people are thinking about you when they are shopping for the product or service you provide. I believe what Shingy is saying is to take that a step further. Almost everything is a conversation now, and so many companies are on social media – there, they are able to connect with current or potential customers. Customer service happens on social media now… and here at TM, we have an AMAZING social media team (shout out to Lacy Jo and AK)!
So why am I writing about this? (Honestly, I’ve kind of forgotten “why” myself…) In the upcoming weeks, I’m going to be featuring some of Shingy’s videos from his interview series, “SHINGERVIEWS” (I don’t know if this has to be capitalized, but I always see it in all caps, so I’ll just go with the flow). In this series, he talks with top level execs, artist, owners… etc, about their personal perspectives of media and how they approach it in their professional lives. I found this series very interesting, and I hope you do too. For this week though, I thought it would be necessary to (somewhat) introduce Shingy, and shed a little light on him.
