Keys to a Great Cover Photo

When you meet someone, you want to make a good first impression. When people go to your Facebook page for the first time, it’s like they’re meeting your company for the first time. Your cover photo is the first thing people see when they go to your page. It’s the first impression you get to make through social media. It’s critical that you make a good one. We all know how hard a bad first impression is to shake. Today, we’re going to combine the worlds of social media and graphic design as we take a look at some key components of a making a great first impression with your Facebook cover photo.

Keep it Clean
You’re saying, “Duh, Lacy!” But I’m not talking about keeping it PG (although, that’s also important). I’m talking about clutter and imagery. Throwing too much info into your cover photo will overwhelm first time viewers and cause them to go elsewhere. Social media is all about quick, easy to access information. It’s also important to keep your imagery clean. Using fuzzy or grainy imagery is unattractive and it doesn’t appear professional.

Keep it Chatty

I know. You’re in sales. It’s your job to be. But your social media is not the place to sell. Your cover photo falls under the same rules. Now, I’m not saying that you can NEVER push specials with your cover photo and I’m not saying that you should never discuss your product and/or service. But be very careful how you do it and don’t do it all the time. Keep it informative, not “in your face” and beneficial to your customers.

Keep it Catchy

Colors, wording, imagery. There are many ways to do this and most times the type of company determines which of those things will be most successful and how those key components can be most successful.

Keep it Correct

Nothing drives me more crazy in a cover photo than one that’s not laid out correctly. When important pieces are covered by the profile picture or do not fit within the live space because it’s not the correct size. Make sure you know how the cover photo should be laid out before you get started.

Keep it Current

Many people find one cover photo that they like and then keep it forever. We encourage our clients to change out their cover photos regularly. Whether it’s once a month or once a quarter, just make sure you are giving your page a fresh look.

So, there you have it! The 5 C’s of a great cover photo. At Transformation Marketing, because it’s such an important part of your Facebook page, we include customized cover photos in all of our social media packages. We make sure they get changed out every several months to ensure the page and content doesn’t get stale and we ensure that the 5 C’s are met to the best of our abilities. As I said, a cover photo is a combination of knowing social media and knowing graphic design, which is why our company is so unique. Our team approach is the perfect way to go about cover photo design and we are proud of the examples we have been able to produce.  If you need help with your social media’s first impression, give us a call, today!
