Thinking Like a Casting Director

Ok, so you’ve got a cool brand.  You’ve got a great product.

And now you’ve got to get the word out about them.

So you decide to make a commercial.  And, you know what?  It’s got a pretty solid concept.

But…uh…that actor of yours? He’s got a monotone voice and has trouble expressing emotion. Or worse, he sounds flat out cheesy. Chances are good that he’s the reason nobody is hanging around to watch (or listen).  Kinda sucks, huh?

When selecting a speaker or an actor for a commercial or video, it’s imperative to remember that the actor is the audience’s first impression of your brand.  Meaning that, ideally, you want this individual – be it male or female – to evoke confidence and exude enthusiasm. People act based on the actions of others, even paid actors. A boring voice talent makes the viewer think, “If this guy’s not excited, why should I be?” Not sure how, exactly, to go about locating that “perfect” person? That’s OK…we can help!

It’s important to find someone who can align their demeanor with the tone of your company. If your brand is quirky, you may want someone who is unpredictable and animated in the way they speak and move. If your brand is serious, you should choose an individual who is inherently professional and confident. Above all, you need someone who is believable. For those of you who’ve never given it a shot, acting is hard. Like, really hard. Like any other profession, to be a good actor means having natural talent and experience. It’s generally not enough to just ask your buddy if he wants to be in your commercial (unless he has acting experience, of course). Talent is an investment, and hiring a good actor is one of the best ways to ensure your audience will connect with your message.
