It’s almost the end of September, so it is time for this month’s Top Viral Ad Videos. (If you missed last month’s, you can check them out here)

Power of a Bookbook; IKEA (11,924,000 views at the time of writing this)

IKEA demonstrates that they don’t take themselves too seriously with this sarcastic introduction video for their 2015 Catalogue. “It’s not a digital book, or an ebook … it’s a ‘bookbook.'” Throughout the video, they introduce features of the catalogue in a similar fashion that Apple would use to introduce a new tablet. Promising features like, “At only 8mm thin, and weighing in at less than 400g [ the bookbook] comes pre-installed with thousands of home furnishing ideas.” The 2015 IKEA Catalogue truly is ‘AMAZING.’

The all new adidas Energy Boost; adidas (6,457,000 views)

This video is for one of adidas’ new running shoes, Energy Boost. The main feature of these shoes, is the cushion and response of the soles. According to adidas, these shoes give a greater return on energy as the runner pushes off of each step. That is why in the video there are so many close-ups of the shoes compressing and then returning. I liked the quick cuts between the runner and other footage, which symbolizes an amplification of her actions. I will admit this video was affective on me. I went to adidas’ website and looked around at a few of their shoes. It got me amped to go for a run! There is absolutely no way that I am going to! But I at least thought about it… and that counts for something, right?

Sweat It to Get It; Gatorade (16,034,000 combined views for series)

The concept is that Gatorade was created and designed for athletes to help return electrolytes and other necessary ‘science things’ back into the body after physical activity, so all of us non-athletes don’t need/deserve Gatorade. Well, to be fair… us ‘normies’ can have it too, we just need to work up a little sweat first.   I’ve watched all eight videos from the series, and what I’m still not sure of is whether it is “fake” or not. What I mean is whether the customers walked into that gas station without prior knowledge of what was about to happen. I can say that it was shot in a manner similar to a hidden/candid camera show. Throughout the store, you can see where the cameras are hidden behind two-way mirrors.   Two things that make me question the “real-ness” of these is that 1) these people came in to just buy Gatorade and nothing else? 2) During these videos, no one else walks into the gas station. Both of these points could be explained, but they make me a bit skeptical.   In the end, it doesn’t really matter. They are fun videos that have generated a lot of views for Gatorade, so good for them.
