We all know what Shiny Object Syndrome is, right? In case you need a bit of a refresher, here’s a great definition and example (courtesy of Urban Dictionary, of course!):
Shiny Object Syndrome
noun – uncountable
the need for sparkly accessories (“bling”).
I can’t walk through the mall without having to stop every five feet because of Michelle’s Shiny Object Syndrome. She has to stop at nearly every store.

Know what I’m talking about now? OK…good.
So, why am I writing about it? Well, because it applies to business and marketing, too.
Just like with everything else, when it comes to advertising and marketing, there always seems to be something new coming down the pike that promises to be “the next new big thing”. And, as such, it gets a lot of hype. Business owners perk up and take notice, especially when that “next new big thing” promises a whole host of items that it hasn’t had the time to prove it can deliver. Because, if there’s an avenue out there that can (potentially) increase the visibility of their business, when in the world wouldn’t you jump on the bandwagon? After all, we’ve all seen what happens to businesses that drag their feet and lag behind the adaptation curve…they lose a piece of their market share. However, it’s important to remember that:
“Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat” – Sun Tzu
Often times – especially when businesses try to navigate these murky waters alone – one of two things happen:
1. They hop on that bandwagon 100% – forgoing all other options or strategies – and opt to place all their eggs into one (potentially very rickety) basket; or,
2. They try to do EVERYTHING and wind up spreading themselves so thin that they simply can’t keep up.
Take the internet, for instance. It’s like Shiny Object Syndrome on big time steroids. There are about a bazillion and one (that might be a bit of an overstatement, but still) social media platforms and networking communities and what not popping up out there, making it hard to differentiate between “truly awesome” and “waste of my time”.
