This March, a non-profit organization took the top spot in the video chart with over 90 millions views. The Ad Council produced this ad, “Love Has No Labels,” to spread a message to society. This was huge for the brand as it beat out many major brands including Google and Microsoft.
This ad was produced as a PSA to show people that love can be between anyone and that there is no standard way to love. It brings up issues that have been topics of controversy in society.
When the ad begins, it shows an assembly of people watching a big, dark screen. The crowd watches as two skeletons appear from behind the screen as though looking at an X-ray. The bodies appear to embrace and even kiss before the two skeletons separate and walk to the edges of the screen. As the skeletons approach the edges of the screen, one pokes its head from behind the screen, and we now see that skeleton belongs to a woman. Then on the other side of the screen, the second skeleton peaks out from behind the screen and we see that it is also a woman. The two women stand on the stage, as text behind them reads, “Love has no gender.” The song, “Same Love” by Macklemore begins to play and people cheer in support of the women and the message.
More skeletons appear on the screen, showing couples and groups of all different ages, races, and genders. Messages appear saying, “Love has no gender, age, disability, race, or religion.” “Love is love.” The advertisement then ends saying, “Love has no labels. Rethink bias at lovehasnolabels.com.”
Overall, the ad is very powerful and sheds light on issues that are very controversial in society right now. The video has out done many known brands and has already made the top 25 lists for the most viewed video ads of all time.
This non-profit was able to bring awareness from one video. This shows that now consumers crave ads that emit emotion and a story. Most people can recall the Super Bowl ads they remember because they are the ones, like the Budweiser ad, that pulled at the heartstrings.
By partnering with Upworthy, the Ad Council was able to share this video even more and reach more viewers. When non-profits have the ability to partner with other brands, they can spread their message to a large amount of viewers.
