Hash Tags – What the Heck?

Alright, hash tags are no new thing by any means, but they have been a big topic of discussion in our office lately and since we like to let our readers in on what’s going on at our office, we thought we’d share the discussion with you!

A couple of days ago, my significant other told me he had “hashtagged” something for the first time. Immediately, I began to snicker because I could just see where this was going. (And couldn’t wait to share it with my coworkers.) As I had guessed, though he had the right idea and good intentions, he hadn’t used the hash tag quite right and to make things worse, he doesn’t even have a Twitter account. When I told my coworkers about this, it started the discussion on why we use hash tags for our clients and the importance of that. Today, we would like to share some of those things with you.

What is a Hash Tag?
A hash tag is a word or grouping of words with the pound sign in front of it. If there is more than one word, there can be no spaces. Hash tags are not case sensitive.

Why use a Hash Tag?
On Twitter, a hash tag will become a link once your tweet is posted, so you or anyone else can click on it and see what others are saying about the same topic. See the screen shot below for #hashtag.

Why would a business use Hash Tags?
Hash tags get your posts out there to more people when used correctly. We keep an eye on trending hash tags and try to use them for our clients when they apply. The company might then be something of interest to someone discussing the topic, in return, gaining the business another follower.
