Cheap Website Add-Ons – Are They as Good as They Say They Are?

We see it all the time. Business owners are called weekly, sometimes even daily by reps letting them know of all the amazing marketing mediums they have to offer. Recently, I’ve gotten an extra taste of this. At the beginning of this year, I started my own little side hustle. I wanted to get something up on the web, but I knew I was just starting out and didn’t need anything fancy. I wasn’t trying to get my website to the top of Google, I just needed something to send people to when they asked questions. So, I hopped online and found the least expensive one I could. (I’m going to let the company remain nameless, but it’s one of those plug-and-play, build-your-own, online website companies.)

Since then, I get calls about twice a month from companies telling me they can help me with my online marketing. Typically, once I tell them I work for a marketing company, they get me off the phone pretty quickly. Some even hang up on me. The one that struck me the most, though, was the one I got just a few days ago. It was a call from the company I have my website through. First of all, they didn’t even know my site was coming up for renewal. Second, the lady talked so much and so fast, I couldn’t get a word in edgewise. She ended up forwarding me on to another gentleman. I told this man that my site was coming up for renewal so I was interested in what he had to say. He said my website plan was “an okay plan”, but then quickly moved on to another add-on I should consider.

He said that if I pay them an extra fee, they could get my website listed on Google, Bing and Yahoo. (Sidebar: If anyone ever tells you they can get your website “listed” on a search engine… RUN AWAY! Your site is already listed on the search engine unless you have search engines blocked – which is not smart. What you want is to improve your rank.) I listen to the man for a while and he asked how I market my business. I told him that I worked for a marketing company and he said, “Oh, I’m going to go ahead and let you go, then,” and he promptly hung up.

Why do these reps want to get me off the phone so quickly once they hear what I do for a living? Because what they’re selling is complete garbage and they know it… and they know that I know it. They’re selling fake, useless, or near useless junk for a small price to make you think you’re getting a great deal, but what you’re really getting is ripped off. They know to the average consumer, online marketing is an overwhelming and scary realm, and they know if they make it sound good enough, they can sell you just about anything.

What’s worse is that they undermine companies like us at Transformation Marketing, who are genuinely concerned about your company’s success, and they make business owners leery of getting involved with another online marketing company again.

So, next time you get a call from a fast-talking salesperson who says they can do great things for you at a very small price, think again. Remember: If something seems to good to be true, it probably is. Or better yet, if you’re one of our beloved clients and you get a call like this, give them our number. We’ll probably never hear from them, but you probably won’t again, either. And you can do what you need to knowing your marketing is in good hands!
