It’s pretty clear nowadays that social media plays an important role in marketing for ALL businesses. Whether you’re a small family-owned bakery, a large law firm, or a non-profit looking to raise money, having a strong social media presence can greatly increase your engagement and take your business to the next level.

If you find that your social media is lacking, whether it be engagement, followers, or you don’t really even have a social media presence, here are 4 things to help you get ahead.


1. Use Pictures and Videos

If you’ve ever scrolled through Facebook or Twitter, you can agree that there are some posts you just scroll right past and some that you want to stop and take a look at. If I had to take a guess, 9 times out of 10 the one you stop to look at is one that has a picture or video attached to it. Maybe it’s a funny cartoon, or a clip from a movie, or colorful photo. Whatever it was that caught your eye, it worked. It made you stop, even if it was just for a second, and take a closer look.

There are so many posts and people out there trying to get your attention. Don’t just post words. How boring! People are far more likely to stop and engage with your post if you have something besides words to draw them in.

2. Keep it simple

Speaking of words, don’t use too many. Even with a pretty picture or interesting video, no one wants to read a long drawn out post, except for maybe when it’s a family member or close friend, but not from their plumber. Find a short and simple way to get your message across, then find some kind of media to help emphasize what you’re trying to say.

Really need to get a lot of information out there? You’re probably better off writing a short, fun, interesting post with a link to a blog or website where the information is stored than to post it all at once to social media. Plus, many social media sites, Twitter for example, limit how many characters you can post anyways!


3. Be interactive

There are so many fun ways to engage people on social media! You can set up polls for people to weigh in on various pre-decided options. You can ask open-ended questions and people will respond with feedback. You can go live! We have several clients at Transformation Marketing that we utilize these options heavily for. Including ourselves! We currently, once a week, do a Facebook live with two of our staff where they are able to share some of their wisdom. It’s a great way for people to put a face to your organization and more often than not it’s a lot of fun to watch!

Polls, specifically, are a great way to find out how to improve your business and increase engagement on social media. Give your followers some options for things they’d like to see more or less of. Find out whether they like it more when you do this or that. Need another way to incentivize them? Tell your followers that whoever participates has the opportunity to win a fun prize tied to your business! Have them tag a friend to be entered to win! You will build your following, increase your engagement, and keep your customers/clients/followers happy.


4. Be Creative

Finally, BE CREATIVE! There are so many different businesses vying for our attention these days. Your competition wants those customers/clients/followers just as bad as you do, so stand out! Get creative. Find your hook. What makes you different? Make sure people know! A picture, a post, and a giveaway alone aren’t going to grow your business. Consistent creativity that makes someone say, “Huh. That’s cool. I want to know more.”, is what’s going to draw people in and keep them coming back for more.
