Top Viral Ad Videos – Aug 2014

by | Aug 28, 2014 | All Blogs, VIDEO

It’s the end of the month, and I thought it would be fun to try something new. I’m going to feature some of the highest trending ad videos for the month.

1. Checkout; Visa (7,518,000 views at the time of writing this) I liked this commercial for Visa’s Checkout service, because it is a great 15 second ad and is perfect for Pre-roll advertising. It makes great use of the short runtime by demonstrating the product, being funny, and keeping my attention. When I finished watching this commercial for the first time, I thought, “Wow, that was pretty quick… must have been a 30 second video.” Even though it is half that time, they pack quite a bit into this ad – a quick story, relatable situation, call to action, and even a bit of Morgan Freeman – even with all of this in the ad, it doesn’t feel rushed, just brisk.

2. The Gentleman’s Wager; Johnnie Walker Blue Label (8,357,000 views) I will start out by admitting, I’m not entirely sure why… but I really like this video! It is very cinematic; there are great colors, interesting textures, and heavy atmosphere.   For a bit of fun, when you are watching it, here are a couple of games you can play: First game, count how many times someone almost takes a drink from their glass, but doesn’t. Second game, pick out all of the blue elements in the video – I would bet almost every single one was put in there by the art director; after all, you have to stay on brand.   On a side note, after watching The Gentleman’s Wager, I was curious how much a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label would run an interested consumer. I mean, I have all of this blog writing money; maybe I could splurge and treat myself. $229 a bottle!!! That is around $13.50 a shot! I guess I’ll stick with something a little more my speed.

3. #TDThanksYou; TDCanada (10,738,000 views) TD, a Canadian bank, candidly captures its customers interacting with an ATM, but not just any ATM… this is an Automated Thanking Machine. In honor of TD’s annual customer appreciation day, they surprised customers (who I believe were brought in to be part of a focus group) with a extremely personable ATM.   We watch as bank customers walk up to the ATM, insert their cards, to be then thanked by a (somewhat) electronic, but friendly voice. From here I expected it to be pretty vanilla: person after person would walk up to be shocked by a talking machine. There would be the varying degrees of ‘freak-outs’ and probably an elderly person, who is surprising unfazed by the whole experience. To a degree, the video did start that way… but as I watch, I drop my skepticism because great things are happening! I don’t want to say too much, so check it out below.
