Stop Mucking Up My Facebook Feed…Please!

Empty word bubble surrounded by images and icons representing the internet and social media online

I have a confession to make – I follow a LOT (not a ton but, you know, quite a few) of businesses and news outlets on Facebook. I know it’s not for everyone (like {ahem} my dad), but it works for me – with two kids and a multitude of jobs, I never have time to sit down and read the paper or watch the news.

However, the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald are both more than happy to fill me in on pertinent articles via social media, as is Fox News, CNN, and The Soup (don’t knock it…a girl’s got to get her celebrity gossip fix somehow!). I also subscribe to various other entities, including stores (like Target) and clothing retailers…for the sake of simplicity – and because I’m not really in the mood to call anyone out right now – the one I’m about to write about shall be referred to as Company X (lest they be too harshly judged by others).

I started following Company X a few weeks ago, after the page popped up in my “you might like this” area in my Facebook feed. And, you know what? I so totally did. They post fun articles and quizzes. They link to great blogs and have a seemingly never ending stream of wonderful little tidbits of advice.

As it turns out, though, apparently they have a never ending supply of EVERYTHING and want to make sure they saturate Facebook with it as quickly as possible.

Initially, this didn’t really annoy me.

Now, however, it totally does.

Why?

BECAUSE IT’S MUCKING UP MY FACEBOOK FEED SOMETHING FIERCE!!!!!

This afternoon I went back and attempted to count just how many times Company X had posted thus far into the day. You know what I discovered?

They had 22 – TWENTY TWO – posts in four hours.

Not four weeks, mind you…FOUR HOURS.

If we extrapolate a full day from those numbers, that means that in 24 hours I can expect to see somewhere in the neighborhood of 132-ish posts.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NOOOOO!

Clearly, Company X did NOT watch Lacy Jo’s video about over posting from our Social Media Mishaps series last summer (shame on them!).

Had they been smart and watched the video, they would have realized that – for a business – they are WAY over posting (or, let’s face it…for ANYONE!).

As Lacy Jo stated in her video, it’s best to start with a few posts per week and then work your way up from there – you need to figure out where, exactly, that “happy medium” line is that exists between your fans and your posts. For some businesses that’s twice a week – for others it’s twice a day.

It’s a fine line for sure, but it’s one that those of us here at Transformation Marketing work very hard to pin down for each and every one of our social media clients. In fact, we have an entire team dedicated to our social media clients! If you’d like more information on how we can help get your social media campaign to the next level, give us a call…we’re here to help!
