Earlier today, I was searching online for a birthday present for my son…fortunately, I located what I was looking for with ease. However, that was the only easy thing about the process.
Why, you ask?
Because I was attempting to view the website in question on my phone.
And the retailer didn’t have a mobile site.
Which meant that I was forced to try and view the entirety of the website – a website that was meant to be viewed on a computer screen – on the 5.2″ screen of my phone. I did the requisite “pinch and zoom” to get things to the point where I could actually make out words and pictures. However, I couldn’t view what I wanted with ease so, eventually, I just gave up.
You know what else?
I wound up purchasing what I had been looking for from a different retailers’ site – one that had been optimized for mobile usage. It was a site that didn’t require a jewelers lens to view the content on the page or require me to zoom in so far that I was constantly having to scroll left and right, up and down, to view other products, prices, and descriptions.
We are an on-the-go society – there’s no denying that. As much as I’d love to lug my laptop around with me so that I’d always have the ultimate website viewing experience possible, that’s just not feasible. Which is why I rely on my phone and tablet to get the job done. I spend a LOT of time sitting at soccer practices and basketball practices – time that can be used for, say, shopping online for a birthday present. That way, once I finally do get home and get everyone fed and showered, work through the inevitable tears that are sure to accompany any given nights’ homework, and then get people to bed, I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO DESIRE TO HOP ON THE COMPUTER TO DO A LITTLE LATE NIGHT SHOPPING.
Hence the necessity for a mobile optimized site.
This means that businesses really should be budgeting and working towards a mobile optimized strategy. Because, at the end of the day, having a mobile site is a must. You don’t want your customers going elsewhere because of a poor online experience and, like it or not, online experiences are the way of the world at the moment.
