How to Prepare to Be on Camera

to be on camera

If you’re not used to being in front of the camera, it can be a bit daunting to prepare for a video shoot. Many of our clients are not used to being front and center and need a little guidance when shooting for ads and testimonials. If you feel unsure about being on camera, don’t worry, you’re not the only one! Luckily, we have lots of experience working in the studio and have some advice on how to prepare to be on camera.

A few key tips to help you get ready to be on camera:

Practice Makes Perfect

Before your big day, it’s important to get comfortable speaking in front of the camera. If you can, try recording yourself on your phone or camera to get used to seeing yourself on screen. This will help you relax and feel more natural when it comes time to shoot. Practicing allows you to figure out your talking points and help you get into your natural speaking flow. However, there is a happy medium. Don’t try to over-memorize as it can be obvious that you’re reciting a script line by line.

Wear the Right Clothing

What you wear on camera is just as important as how you act. You want to dress in clothes that are flattering, professional, and appropriate for the setting. Certain colors and patterns can look great in person but can appear washed out or busy on camera. We recommend sticking to solid colors that complement your skin tone. Camera-Ready Make-Up

Before you start your video shoot, it’s important to do a little prep work on your skin. This means applying some camera-ready make-up to help you look your best. Foundation can help even out skin tone and conceal blemishes. A little bit of powder can also help reduce shine and keep you looking fresh. Just keep it natural!

Feel Good

It’s important to be well-rested before a big shoot. Lack of sleep can make you look tired and can affect your performance. Also, make sure that you’re healthy and feeling your best before you get on camera. The audience will be able to pick up on whether you’re tired or sick, which isn’t what you want to be known for.

Relax

First, relax and take a deep breath. It’s normal to feel a bit nervous, but try to stay calm and focus on your breath. It sounds simple, but it can be helpful to close your eyes for a few seconds and envision yourself nailing the take. It might also help to have a friend or family member on set with you for support.

Have a Good Posture

Good posture is key to looking confident and camera-ready. Make sure you’re sitting or standing up straight with your shoulders back. Avoid crossing your arms in front of your chest as it can make you look closed off. If you get too comfortable, you’ll start to slouch and look uninterested… and maybe even a little frumpy!

Make Eye Contact

When you’re talking to the camera, it’s important to make eye contact. It might feel awkward at first, but try your best to look into the lens as if you’re speaking to a friend. This will help engage viewers and make them feel like you’re talking directly to them.

Smile

A genuine smile can go a long way in making you look camera-ready. Smiling also makes you appear more approachable and likable to viewers. With years of experience, we know the best way to end a video is with a smile. Just relax and be yourself.

Use Gestures

Gestures can help add energy and expressiveness to your on-camera performance. Talking with your hands can give your presentation another layer of interest and dimension. Just make sure you’re not overdoing it, too much movement can be distracting.

Closing Thoughts

We hope these tips help you feel more prepared and confident the next time you’re in front of the camera. Just remember to relax, take a deep breath, and have fun with it!
