Halloween Marketing So Good, It’s Scary

Petco Halloween post of 2 chihuahua's in a scene from Titanic

As Halloween season creeps in, there’s something about marketers that turns delightfully eerie. Halloween is a perfect way to play around with a multitude of themes from playfully spooky all the way to completely frightening. Here are 3 of my top halloween marketing examples that are sure to give you the heebie-jeebies.

Snickers: Horseless Headsman

This video has it all. Cute Trick or Treaters, comedy, and a little bit of scary at the end. Playing on the classic “Headless Horseman” figure, Snickers hit this one out of the ballpark.

Petco: “Make a Scene” Halloween photo contest

Contests are the perfect way to create engagement on social media during holidays. In 2013, Petco started a contest called “Make a Scene” in which fans were to submit pictures of their pets dressed up in costumes. The response was tremendous and it quickly went viral.  According to an article on AddThis, online engagement increased for Petco’s Facebook page by 325% during the month of October in 2013. There’s just something about pets in little costumes that grabs the attention.

REI: Zombie Preparedness Guide

What a perfect way to market your outdoor gear during the Halloween season than to incorporate it into a Zombie Preparedness Guide! This may be the best example yet because it incorporates specific products directly into the image. This key to this advertisement is that they were able to give out product details in a fun way without customers even knowing.

Marketing on Halloween isn’t all tricks and treats. At the end of the day you have to make your customer remember WHO put out the advertisement and why they should use your product. If you follow the lead of some of the examples above, you’re sure to create a gruesomely awesome campaign.
